For Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), there is a five-month waiting period for payment of benefits. For example, if you are found to be disabled on Jan. 1, your first payment will be June 1 of that same year. Social Security can pay a person up to one year prior to the date of application.

For Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there is no waiting period. You can only be paid back to the date the application was filed.
