There are several types of Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) benefits available. When people are disabled and are unable to work, they're generally most concerned with financial benefits and when the benefits begin. The amount of money you may receive depends on how much money you have earned in the past. In order to be eligible for disability benefits, you must have worked at least five out of the last 10 years.

If you are disabled or coping with a significant medical conditions, your medical benefits likely will be very important. Anyone receiving SSDI automatically will be eligible for Medicare coverage after receiving disability benefits for two years.

Other types of disability benefits available

Other benefits available include disabled widows and widowers benefits, which are paid to people who are at least 50 and become disabled within a certain period of time after the death of their spouse. The spouse who passed away must have worked long enough under Social Security to be insured.

An adult who became disabled before age 22 may be able to claim benefits based on a parent's earnings record. Social Security classifies these as "child" benefits because the parent's earnings record is used. This is an option if/when the parent 1) becomes disabled; 2) starts getting retirement benefits; or 3) dies.
