Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are provided to people with low income or who lack resources. This may include Oklahomans who have worked only a brief time and do not qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Those who may be eligible include self employed individuals, farmers, business owners, homemakers or individuals who are out of the workforce. In some cases, children may be eligible for SSI benefits.
To qualify, you must meet income guidelines and be either blind or disabled. The program is designed to provide cash to people so they can meet their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
SSI is a federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues, not by Social Security taxes (This is one of the differences between SSI and SSDI).
