Long-term vs. short-term disability

Disability benefits are meant for long-term conditions

At Hansen Dirani & Associates Law Offices, we understand how difficult it can be to overcome an injury or disability. The SSD and SSI application process can be complicated. Who is or isn't eligible for benefits has become a difficult question. Our attorneys are prepared to help you get through the process. Get in touch with our firm today.

Social Security Disability Insurance is designed to help people with long-term disabilities. These are disabilities expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. If you have a short-term disability, you may be eligible for compensation through other programs (for example, your employer may offer short-term disability insurance).

Criteria for those with disabilities

The following are the standards used by the Social Security Administration in considering if a person is disabled:

  • You cannot do the work you did before the disability.
  • You cannot adjust to other work because of your disability.
  • You have a disability that has lasted or is expected to last at least a year or is expected to
  • result in death.
