Coping with HIV? You may qualify you for SSDI or SSI benefits

In pursuing a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim or a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claim, you must show that your condition is expected to last at least a year or result in death. Your condition also must be serious enough to prevent you from doing substantial gainful work. If you have contracted HIV or AIDS and are unable to work, you may be eligible for SSDI or SSI benefits.

HIV claims can be difficult. While many people with the infection are unable to work, others may not be found to be disabled. Each case is unique. Social Security will closely look at your medical records, including symptoms, laboratory findings and other information pertaining to your case.
