Amputation or loss of limb

Amputation or loss of limb disabilities may qualify you for Social Security benefits

Amputation disability or a loss of limb disability can have a significant impact on your life. You may be unable to work in any capacity, which would qualify you for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

In examining your claim, the Social Security Administration will look at your ability to function after your amputation or loss of limb. In some cases, the administration may find you are able to work in a certain capacity and will reject your claim.

To qualify for benefits, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Amputation of both hands; or
  • Amputation of one or both lower extremities at or above the ankle, impairing the ability to walk effectively (you also must have complications resulting in an ability to use prosthetics to ambulate); or
  • Amputation of one hand and one lower extremity at or above the ankle, impairing the ability to walk effectively (you also must have complications resulting in an ability to use prosthetics to ambulate); or
  • Hemipelvectomy (a high-level pelvic amputation) or hip disarticulation (removing the leg at the hip joint).
