If your SSDI or SSI claim has been turned down during the "reconsideration" stage, you still have options. You can file another appeal by requesting a hearing with an administrative law judge (ALJ). The ALJ — a person who did not participate in any of the earlier decisions — typically makes a decision after hearing personally from the claimant.

How the ALJ hearing works

This hearing usually involves you and your attorney or advocate, the administrative law judge and a vocational expert. After the hearing, the ALJ determines if your claim is valid. If the judge decides your claim is not valid, you can continue filing further appeals — first with the Appeals Council. If still unsuccessful, you can file an appeal through the federal courts.
