What does Symbyax treat and what are the risks?

Symbyax, which is marketed by Eli Lilly and Co., is an antidepressant used to treat bipolar disorder and other serious cases of depression. Symbyax was approved in 2003, but since then has been linked to the following:

  • Congenital heart defects – A common form of birth defects is known as either atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects.
  • PPHN – The New England Journal of Medicine found a link between Symbyax and infants born with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.
  • Abdominal and cranial birth defects – Two separate cranial birth defects linked to Symbyax are called omphalocele (abdominal wall defect at the base of the umbilical cord) and craniosynostosis, which causes one or more sutures on a baby’s head to close earlier than normal.
  • Autism – A study in 2011 found a link between Symbyax and babies being born with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).

Symbyax Side Effects

Antidepressants such as Symbyax also are linked to serious behavioral changes, including suicidal thoughts. Children exposed to SSRIs may become hostile, irrational, violent, or suicidal. Hansen Dirani & Associates is unaware of any Symbyax class action lawsuits.
