The Duragesic Patch, also known as the Fentanyl Transdermal System, is used to treat chronic pain. The patch works by allowing the drug to seep into the body through a steady dosage over an extended period of time.
While Fentanyl has provided pain relief to people with moderate- to severe chronic pain, it also has been linked to harmful side effects, including risk of overdose, which could lead to respiratory failure, permanent coma and death. Manufacturing problems related to the Duragesic Patch has lead to five recalls since 1994.
Exposure of the skin to any leaked medication can cause nausea, over sedation, drowsiness or other potentially fatal problems. Fentanyl is about 80 times stronger than morphine, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
One patch, even at its lowest strength, is enough to cause dangerous side effects for patients who lack a tolerance for opoid.
Fentanyl’s manufacturer was ordered to pay more than $35 million to families of individuals who died who were part of the first four lawsuits. A $13.3 million award was recently upheld on appeal.
If you are coping with side effects of Fentanyl, or the Duragesic Patch, take action immediately. After you seek medical attention, contact an experienced attorney in Tulsa. For a free consultation, contact Hansen Dirani & Associates. We are ready to listen to you and discuss your legal options.
