The anti-depressant Effexor, manufactured by Pfizer Inc., is used by millions to treat anxiety and depression. Known as a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) Effexor is associated with birth defects.
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and cited by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), women who took antidepressants similar to Effexor in the second half of pregnancy ran a higher risk of giving birth to babies who developed Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) than those women not taking the drugs.
Infants with PPHN are unable to process oxygen in the same way as other infants. With PPHN, blood in infants does not enter the lungs, which results in oxygen depletion to other organs. About one-fifth of the babies born with PPHN do not survive and those who do survive may struggle with long-term breathing difficulties, seizures, developmental disorders and hearing loss.
Babies exposed to Effexor prior to birth may be at an increased risk of developing heart defects. Researchers have found that women using Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), including Effexor, in the first 12 weeks of gestations have a 40 percent greater risk of giving birth to babies with malformations.
Effexor also is in a class of drugs known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs are designed to raise or restore serotonin levels, thus relieving depression. Other drugs in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class include:
